Medical Education Exchange
For the past two decades, the Robert J. Havey MD Institute for Global Health and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University have participated in a bi-directional exchange of medical students. Students spend 4-8 weeks living in Stellenbosch and Chicago. Students rotate at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital in areas such as infectious diseases, primary care, pediatrics, surgery and more.
Public Health & Development in South Africa
The Public Health & Development in South Africa program introduces students to public health issues, development policies, and political reform in contemporary South Africa. Students take courses such as “Contemporary South Africa: A Political Economy/Policy Perspective,” “Culture, Language, and Identity in South Africa,” “Public Health in South Africa” and “Development Perspectives on Health in South Africa through Community Engagement.” Sara McGuinn serves as the advisor for the program. Professor Michael Fagen serves as the Global Health Studies Faculty Liaison.
Global Healthcare Technologies
Designed exclusively for Northwestern University engineering students, the Global Healthcare Technologies program offers hands-on experience in developing medical devices to improve health outcomes in resource-poor environments, particularly townships around Cape Town. Students work closely with Northwestern faculty, Stellenbosch University faculty and local health professionals to identify the healthcare needs of local clients and develop a design project. The emphasis is on problem definition, user-centered solutions, and the utilization of appropriate technologies. The program is organized in conjunction with McCormick’s Center for Innovative Global Health Technologies (CIGHT) and the Institute for Biomedical Engineering at Stellenbosch. Sara McGuinn serves as the advisor for the program. Professors Martin Nieuwoudt, Matt Glucksberg, and David Kelso co-direct the program.
